Pink Mountaintops

The other day I started listening to an album, that has gathered dust on my shelve for too long. It is “Outside Love” by Pink Mountaintops, the solo project from Black Mountain’s front man Stephen McBean. I remember buying it after hearing a few song on his Myspace, when it was released in 2009, and I was immediately sold. The songs are deeply touching, swelled in reverb, has a lot of layers, and some amazing contributions from female guest vocalists. Just listen to the stunning duet “Outside Love” with Jesse Sykes. I think I have to go see Black Mountain when they play in Berlin this October!

Fantasy Film Festival – Berlin

This week I have seen a couple of films at the Fantasy Film Festival in Berlin, what a great festival by the way! I watched the English director Gareth Edwards monster movie “Monsters”, where you follow two peoples journey from the “alien infected” areas in South America, to the borders of The States. Its a great movie, with focus on the actors, their relationship and their journey (inside & outside). It’s a beautiful, exiting and very well acted film, even though the actors, beside the two leads, are locals who happened to be there, when the small film crew arrived. A very nice thing is that the whole “monster”-aspect is more insinuated than “in your face”, as you often see it. This is more like “Jaws”, where you know the shark is there, but you rarely see it.

The second film I went to see, was Sean Byrne’s Australian horror movie “The Loved Ones”. I really didn’t know what to expect from this movie, after watching the trailer, where a dad kidnaps a guy who won’t go the the prom with his daughter. It turned out to be a fantastic genre movie. It was (of course) really morbid, but with a lot of “black” humor, amazing acting, a very good script, and visually it was just extremely cool. If you like the genre, then this film is a must, its original, and as others has written, its an instant cult classic.

Man vælger selv filformatet. Det bliver naturligvis også muligt kun at købe lydfilerne.

Concerts in Berlin

The Hold Steady – June 16th

I just recently started to listen to The Hold Steady, and actually I just bought tickets for this show in the last minute. I had heard that The Hold Steady would be worth seeing live, and that was true! Craig Finn & company entered the stage with an energy that was stunning, and it lasted the whole concert through. They played, of course, songs from their new great album “Heaven Is Whenever”, but we also got a bunch of older songs, among them a very intense version of Hornets! Hornets! from “Separation Sunday”. All in all it was a great intense show, with a lot of great songs!

John Grant – June 17th

Years ago I went to a concert with John Grant’s old band The Czars. I remember it as being a good concert, but I never got to listen to any of their albums. That may change soon. I have been listening a lot to John Grant’s solo debut “Queen of Denmark” lately, it is an amazing album and shows that Grant is one of the finest songwriters around. He writes beautiful original lyrics and he has a unique talent for writing catchy melodies, and one of the most beautiful voices I have heard. Therefore I was very happy that he was playing in Berlin, at the small venue Comet Club. He started the concert alone by the piano and then the band joined him on stage. It was a very intimate evening, and Grant & Co. played, I think, all of the songs from “Queen of Denmark” plus a couple of new ones. It was like being in a living room with the band, which was perfect, and as a little bonus John Grant spoke German! A great great night, that I wont forget anytime soon.

Kellermensch – June 19th

I first saw Kellermensch live at the Spot Festival in Denmark a couple of years back. Then they totally blew me away with their extremely intense live show and their amazing songs, that combine metal with very catchy melodies and a “dusty” sound. The concert at Lido in Berlin did not disappoint. It was short, intense and in your face, and they played new songs from their new EP Narcissus. I highly recommend buying Narcissus which shows new sides of the band. They still sound like Kellermensch, but they show that they have a huge pallet of colors to pick from, when they are writing music, which I think is very promising for future releases.

About Why Write?

Coming all the way from Denmark is Why Write?, Jacob Faurholt’s new project. Surrounded here by friends and long-time collaborators, the Berlin-based songwriter trades the intimate vocals and acoustic guitar of his latest album “Are You In The Mood For Love?” for a spacey sound that sent me back to the early 90’s, when I was 17 and looking forward so much to put my hands on Jesus & Mary Chain’s “Honey’s Dead”. No surprise then that Why Write?’s debut-EP was mixed and mastered by legendary-producer Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500, Half Japanese). Words by Cyril / What A Mess! Records.

This month (June 2010) you can also download our debut, and one and only album, without paying a dime, if you want the complete Sweetie Pie Wilbur catalogue.
